I’ll never understand this mentality. My parents taught us from an early age about donating to those less fortunate and what we considered junk after a while, someone in need could use. Why just let it pile up? My kids donate every year before their birthdays and Christmas. I don’t understand the value in hoarding. OT psychs need to explain.

A lot of it came from the Great Depression. People had literally nothing. They lived in ramshackle huts. My grandfather had everything he owned as a boy in a cigar box. They would have to move a lot for work, or if they couldn’t pay the rent, sometimes in the middle of the night. Times were hard, real hard.
So he decided when he grew up, he never wanted to HAVE to move, and never wanted to HAVE to throw anything away.
He wasn’t a hoarder really, but he had sheds full of just stuff. But that’s where the mentality came from

It is a mental illness.
I’m not a hoarder, but i have family members who span the range from mere ‘packrats’ to hoarders... As a result, i hate any kind of clutter.. i’m actually a purger; not sure if that’s an actual term, but what i do is i go to the opposite extreme- i throw almost everything away, even stuff i might need one day- because i’m so averse to the clutter, pack rat, hoarding illness.

It's usually instigated by some kind of life trauma..usually the loss of a loved one. The hoarding is something they can control. It's not about the things as much as it is controlling their life. The things come to symbolize control and security.
