I know we've faced Todd Grantham as a DC several times, so I was interested to go see how we've fared against his defenses. So I went back and looked at those games and was a little surprised.

YEAR SCHOOL LOCATION RESULT LSU SCORE 1ST DOWNS RUSHING PASSING TOTAL YDS COMP % TURNOVERS 3RD DOWN % RED ZONE % SACKS
2011 UGA SEC CHAMP W 42 13 207 30 237 39% 0 11% 100% 2
2013 UGA ATHENS L 41 22 77 372 449 62% 2 67% 100% 4
2016 LOU CAPITAL ONE BOWL W 29 20 177 217 394 55% 1 41% 100% 1
2017 MSU STARKVILLE L 7 13 133 137 270 45% 1 23% 100% 2
2018 UF GAINESVILLE L 19 20 180 192 372 56% 3 24% 100% 5

LSU Avg
Record 2-3
Score 27.6
1st Downs 17.6
Rush Yds 154.8
Pass Yds 189.6
Total Yds 344.4
Comp % 51.4
Turnovers 1.4
3rd Down % 33.2
Red Zone % 100
Sacks 2.8

I apologize for the jumbled up numbers, but I don't know how to post a spreadsheet on here. His record against LSU is 3-2. The first 3 times we faced his defense, we moved the ball and scored pretty much at will. The last two times we've faced him, he shut us down pretty good. I'm more confident in this year's LSU offense, but there are a few things that we need to do for success. We need to protect the quarterback and limit the sacks, protect the ball, and convert on 3rd down. The years he had success against us, he sacked the quarterback, caused turnovers, and killed us on 3rd down %. He's a bend don't break defense though, as we've been 100% in the red zone against him. The O-Line is key in this game. Just keep moving the sticks Joe and take care of the ball.

If you go back most his success is from inexperienced QBs...hes the best at confusing them. If a QB has a year or two behind him and can finally read a defense hes been torched.

2011 - Jordan Jefferson
2013 - Mettenberger
2016 - Etling
2017 - Etling
2018 - Burrow

The two years we won was because of LSU's Defense & Special Teams play. We never really lit him up except the Mettenberger year, which is a little more comparable to this year's offense.

Its interesting, but I would argue he's got more talent on this Florida team than on any team you list, including the two UGA teams.

He's set this Florida team up perfectly for his style and they play fast and aggressive - the DBs and DL are killer. One LB can't cover, but the others are good enough that they aren't a liability.

One thing I thought was interesting - one of the articles I read stated that their DEs went straight at the QB up the field 90% of the time, without any gap discipline, and it was by design. I'm wondering if Brady/Ems have anything that could take advantage of that?

You really can’t compare past teams to this one. It’s altogether different in personal, coaching and scheme. A better conversation would be how does he do against RPO spread teams.

The DE do appear to fireout straight up the field.. appears to leave a GAP right behind them. Tailor made for the RPO to exploit.
