I was taught the rule of thumb is more like rule of pinky, in that you don't prune any branches on them thicker than your pinky. That can be hard if you inherited the tree.

How the hell does one kill off young shoots growing from roots that are in a flower bed. 
We replanted our beds and everywhere a new bush was planted, dam crepe myrtles are shooting up.
