you can prune those things any time. I've got numerous crepe myrtles and have pruned at all times of the year for many years.

This is correct. I cut on mine all the time but I leave the umbrella.
I have several that just came up and one I have to take down which will require the tractor and bucket to get the roots out. It was planted in 1975 and to say it’s large is an understatement.
