By the time Hallman became LSU coach, purple jerseys were widely held in disfavor. In 1993 Hallman unsuccessfully appealed to the NCAA to amend the rules, in order to wear white for the Tigers' 100 year anniversary season. The fecklessness of Curley's efforts, compounded with the poor effort on the field, led to his dismissal.
Yes I believe Curley could have hung on at LSU a while longer, even while still losing, if he had been successful in amending the policy. That's how passionate LSU fans are about jersey color in Tiger Stadium.
