I was listening to a Fried Egg podcast and they were talking about playing with persimmon woods. When I was growing up, I remember my dad playing with one and I remember when he moved to the Great Big Bertha. I'm interested in playing some persimmons and there are actually a bunch for sale online for cheap. But I know nothing about persimmon drivers/woods.

I'm sure there are cheap, knock off brands or clubs that are laminate and not persimmon. What brand should I look for? How do I know it's real persimmon and not a laminate? Is there a stiff shaft version or was every shaft essentially the same?

Any insight from people who actually played this technology would be helpful.

real persimmon is dense and doesn't look grainy. It will have a few dots in the face and some grain, but not as much as softer wood.

You'll know laminate as soon as you see it.

Good luck. You'll have fun learning to get some result from those old things, but I think you're going to be disappointed with the feel. Find some old Tour Balata balls to get the full affect

It was more difficult to hit a driver consistently back in the day.

Many courses were fairly short compared to today so I used 3 wood off the tee almost routinely.

A big par 5 use to be 500 yards. A big par 4 maybe 415 or so.

I started playing with my Dad’s MacGregor Persimmons. Sweet spot is the size of a dime, but when you hit it, it felt really nice. Sound was much more pleasing than titanium as well.
