It's a very common need in my field.
Sounds like it is time for a bidding war. Become the only consultant for this product and have these useless updates periodically that only you can install and charge big money.

When I was in college I worked for a. Construction company that built large things (I worked on a hospital. )
The policy was if you found something that saved them money and they used your idea then you got half the money saved.
A few people were cut large checks.
