My $0.02:

If you are new to shooting in general (or handguns in particular), you first need to have something to learn / train with.

IMHO, the ideal trainer for newbies, and for the instruction of women and children, is a Ruger SP-101 in 22LR.

Ammunition is cheap, which removes one excuse for not practicing.

Recoil and noise are [comparatively] minimal, allowing the instructee to concentrate on fundamentals of safety, gunhandling, and marksmanship.

And it's very easy to verify that a double-action revolver is unloaded -- an important thing for the uninitiated.

Once basic good habits have become ingrained, it’s a lot easier to transition to something bigger.

And you get the added bonus of ending up with two guns, instead of one.
