So I’m the wrong one to ask.

No you're not. Like I said, I put a lot of stock in independents deciding elections. The only thing I don't understand about their voting is their throwaway votes on a candidate who has no chance in hell in winning an election. When you are trying to get to point B from point A and you come to a fork in the road that neither one appeases you, you still have to make a choice if you want to continue the journey. Some decide to just stay at the fork.

I don't quite get that.

Some recognize that there are not only two destinations on the planet and are brave eough to head cross-country, if neither roadway seems to be going the right direction.

That's easy to explain. Many voters look at the candidates and realize they are faced with the decision to vote for the lesser of two evils. These voters also realize that no matter who they vote for, they are still voting for evil. So they "throw away" their vote on someone who, in their opinion, is not evil, but also has no chance in winning an election. They are principled and their conscience is now clear.

To some, it is not a throwaway vote. It is a vote for the person that you think will do the best job for the country. I'm not going to cast a vote for someone who I don't agree with their policies or their message. I believe in small government, therefore I won't vote either Republican or Democrat next election.
