Too late to spread Bermuda?

I am currently building a house and we are near completion. We have a few large areas that have been releveled, and it’s just dirt. I was thinking of trying to spread Bermuda instead of buying a ton of pallets of st. Aug, and seeing how it takes. I live in south Houston. It is shaded, but still gets a decent amount of sun. Any thoughts on whether it’s too late to try for this year?

Getting pretty late in the year to plant Bermudagrass seed but you are now in an optimal time to plant either annual or perennial ryegrass for a temporary lawn giving you all winter to map a game plan for what type to grass lawn you might want to install or plant next spring when the rye grass dies out with summer heat. Note perennial rye will also die in heat of next summer in the Deep South and also doesn’t grow as fast or tall as annual ryegrass possibly providing you a better looking and more easily maintained winter lawn.

Thanks for the response. Any recommendation on brand for annual rye?

Not really, the few times I’ve used it I just picked up what was on the self, but other posters on the board might weigh in. Might see if you have a “feed and seed” store near you and check with them for recommendations and product. A good retail plant nursery or good country hardware store is also likely to have what you need and someone on staff that can help you.

Bermuda does not grow in the shade. Buy St. Augustine now. You still have 8 weeks of growing season in Houston.
