This does sound like all of the information is not being shared by the co-worker.

There was probably something about this in the paperwork the kid got on the first day and the parents did not read it. While I think the school should probably allow it, I also think the school MUST get some kind of waiver from the parents to allow the child to do so. Having the kid simply arrive at the school on his own puts extra liability and duty on the school so of it was against school policy that would also be understandable.

As for if the parents should allow the 7 year old to do so I think that depends on the kid. Some 7 year olds are not mature enough to handle it and some are.

Why should the school "allow" anything that does not happen on campus? If the parent indicated the child needs bus service that's different. They would have issues. Do bus drivers now have the responsibility of reporting who they picked up and who they didn't every morning?

Yep.

Every year I have to fill out a form about how my son will go home. Times have changed because parents have changed.

Let's say Billy Bikerider or Suzzie Stroller doesn't make it to school one day (skips, gets lost, hit by car, abducted, etc). Is the school supposed to know whether the kid was sick, with parents or something nefarious happened? You can bet that any teacher or principal that didn't immediately notify parents would be sued with the quickness. No way the schools want that liability, especially without being informed.

Also, is the school responsible for making sure the bikes aren't stolen? What happens when the kid goes outside and someone else has taken the bike? Does he call the parents? Take a bus? Does someone from the school have to wait for a parent to show up?

Finally, this situation may have the child living only four blocks from the school, but who trusts a 7 year old to go straight home every day? Is that on the school too? And, how long is the 7 year old going to be left alone at home? How is the school to know that a parent will be there?
