quote:
I spent my day having to call both the city clerk of court where I live and the BR city clerk of court.
One was extremely pleasant, helpful, and knowledgeable.
The other seemed annoyed that I had the audacity to even call them and interrupt their day.
Care to guess which was which?
I had to deal with a friend's death in another state. He had no family, so another friend (who our friend had named as his executor/power of attorney/legal sayer of how it's gonna be before his death) and I made arrangements and flew to retrieve our friend's effects, deal with his affairs, and return his remains.
The first thing we did was go to the coroner's office at 8 am when they opened. From when we walked into the coroner's office to when we walked out was approximately 20 minutes. She was expecting us and when we told the clerk why we were there, the coroner of the county our friend died in brought us into a private room, explained what she could tell us, had all the paperwork we'd need to retrieve the remains printed and ready, had our friend's personal effects that were on his body packaged up for us, and gave us her condolences as she helped us conduct our business in a professional, swift, and courteous manner.
When we left, we looked at each other and both basically said 'it doesn't happen like that in Louisiana'. We didn't really know what to do because we were both used to how this shithole runs and had planned to spend all morning dealing with crapbag government workers. It was shocking how competent civil servants can be.
I'd planned to be there two days based on how difficult I knew things are in this state. We got finished so quickly because of competence that I moved my flight up and came home less than 24 hours after we landed.
