Totally cool! Different interpretations of movies and art makes for fun discussions. I did not read the book, and I was only answering OP’s specific question about what the movie was about. And in the movie, every, or almost every, character was dealing with sort of trauma and how that trauma was causing them to self destruct. Be it Natalie Portman cheating on husband Oscar Isaac self (both characters are self destructing and their marriage is self destructing) , the woman who lost her child, the woman with cancer, etc. The shimmer is a cancer on earth, changing the DNA of everything it touches. Just as cancer is the body self destructing, the shimmer is causing the nature it encompasses to self destruct. At the end Portman's character tricks her mirror creature thing into destroying itself by detonating the grenade or whatever it was.

Having seen the movie and read the trilogy, I can't say you are wrong. In the book NPs or the biologists husband/copy of husband died quickly of cancer. She knew it was not him and specifically went into AreaX to find him. That's all I have. Enough said on my part. The movie was quite different from the book but intriguing none the less. I have to remember this is not the book board.

I found this part to be pretty fascinating. Reflecting all matter back inside the shimmer to mutate everything within. The constant mutation of all cells in a human is what drives people crazy and also what causes those seizures and convulsions and cancer. A telling scene was the tree in the shape of a human.
Sorry if I’m stating the obvious, never had anyone to unpack this all with
