85 mph is only on the toll road that leaves Austin. The rest of Austin is hell, and you maybe go 15 mph.

it's 80 on the toll around Austin and lately they've been toning that down to 70 due to construction. annoying, but better than 35 through Austin.

i usually don't push my luck but i passed a DPS officer on 130 (the 85 mph one) at about 88 once and and he didn't get me, but he was doing about 70 so he may not have been gauging it.

i do about 30-40k miles of driving every year and generally try not to speed, but 5 mph seems to be the safe spot on Texas highways.

the ticket is usually based on % over the speed limit so it's not worth it in a small town. 35 in a 30 will ding you worse than 75 in a 70.
