Sure, but in most decent sized cities there is at least one or two institutions in the industry that have been there for years and have built a reputation for good food. I wasn't ever really looking for a Michelin rated restaurant, just some local flavor.

Maybe in smaller towns, but not the case in just about any city with 100k+ residents.

Not all are located close to where you are. At the end of a long day, it's really ok to get a bite of food somewhere you might feel embarrassed if your peers would see you there.
