I want to say 25 years ago, maybe 30, I was extremely fascinated by these concepts, reasonably intelligent and imaginative, and had a lot of time to read up on things. By no means a mathematical genius or theorist, but I had a pretty decent handle on the concepts of the day.
What little I've looked into things recently, a lot of that stuff I learned has been discredited and scrapped.
I suspect in 25 more years, there will be a greater understanding, and lots of accepted speculation today will again be discarded.
I mean, consider- lots of particles etc are considered "real", because you have intricate equations with known data, and there are holes in the equation. You plug in a variable that makes things work, and you declare that variable to exist... when the only evidence it does, is that the equation requires it.
Maybe the equation is close, but off.
