My dad is looking into using them to install a smart home system in his new house. They quoted him like 17 grand, but it seems like they are just linking together a bunch of other systems with their software.

Anyone use control 4? Worth it? My dad isn't great with technology, but he's not totally useless with it either

It ain't worth 17 grand.

He will have to always call them to program everything.

You can do pretty much all that stuff these days with a good smart hub or two, but you need to be fairly tech savvy to do anything fancy

What’s the scope of the job ?

For 17 grand he is probably getting a lot more than basic automation hub. Really depends on your Dads wants. A Honda Civic will get you to work just fine but some people prefer a luxury vehicle.

A good friend of mine was a director of engineering there (has since moved on to Oracle) and he says: "Nah. It's proprietary shite."

Control4 is a product. It's the AV company charging that amount. In addition, important criteria.... let's say your dad went through with it. Make sure he negotiates complete ownership of the code, otherwise the AV company will own the code, and own your dad if he wants to add or make changes.

Just had C4 installed in my new construction. In and of itself, it's not that expensive. It's all the other ancillary stuff that adds up.. speakers, amplifiers, power conditioners, receivers, etc. So far very pleased. My dad has Savant and the interface is terrible compared to C4. Snap AV just also acquired C4 so this should increase their offerings (but also their ability to control their stuff even further as alluded above)

I had it in my last house and it did everything I wanted.

I would not have paid 17K for it.

If it’s 17K for a couple light bulbs and a tablet than he should kick the guy out his house. But we don’t know what is included in this price. Being C4 it could be a number of different things. This could be for 3 video zones with OLED displays, 12 zones of Sonos audio, and control of every light load in the house. Without knowing the details of the job it’s impossible to say if it’s worth it.

True. It could include HVAC control, smart home security, complete media center solution, a home theater, garage door and outdoor lighting controls.

But, but! But, it’s just linking together a bunch of other systems.

People have no idea how complex a process that is to do.

I’m gonna have to disagree here. You are not going to be as seamless and straight forward as c4 as far as overall use.

Just visited a place that installed a Control4 system and the old florescent light bays were replaced with these PoE light bays:

I think they were 250/each. Price adds up quick

Maybe during the setup process but I have 100+ smart bulbs and switches, smart pool pump, 2 garage door openers, 3 smart door locks, tons of dots, 2 smart thermostats, tons of door and window sensors, mailbox sensor , Sonos everywhere, motion sensors, alarms, cameras, smart outlets and God knows what I'm forgetting and it all runs very smoothly on schedules and triggers and occasional voice command.

I don't see why anyone needs a tablet to do shite in 2019.

I guess if you don't want to set this stuff up yourself or hit the clearance sales at home Depot you can pay someone to do c4.

I'm moving everything to Alexa that I can because that's become a better hub and I feel Google and Amazon will be the ones to stay on the forefront of innovation.

I want to see a c4 setup that can say detect when the mailman comes vs when someone else is checking the mail and provide separate feedback.

I have a Plex server and Chromecasts and rokus and fire TVs and the flexibility to move them around on my existing TVs and to keep up with 4k and 8k and whatever else comes along. How much does it cost for a c4 system to keep up with the latest video technologies?

My little Civic can do things that luxury car with overpriced parts and repair costs can't.

Give me a well engineered Honda Civic over a shitty "luxury" rolls Royce or jaguar that never leaves the shop.

The quote they gave him includes indoor and outdoor speakers for the whole home and back yard + wiring and installation, a TV, sound bar and woofer, security cameras, smart thermostats etc..

I told him that it wasn't worth it but he seems set on wasting his money
