Matt’s Famous El Rancho, Mama’s Tacos, Santa Rita

I think the quintessential Tex-Mex spot in Austin is Matts El Rancho, but it gets busy fast.
Tamale house east on East 6th is a great place that’s been around forever. Joes Bakery on East 7th is great as well.
Habanero Mexican Cafe Is a great neighborhood joint but they are cash only and only open for breakfast and lunch.

Matt's el Rancho is what everyone knows, but gets busy. Habanero's on Oltorf is good. Cash only though. Also, more of a dive, Borego de Oro on Congress.
Bbq that's exceptional but not gonna have a massive line isn't easy to find. Terry Black's on Barton Springs is really good but can get busy. My hidden gem is Brown's BBQ on Lamar. As good as you'll get anywhere and in the parking lot of a bar. Eat inside or out and have a beer. Sometimes they have a special where you spend $10 inside gets you a free plate of bbq. You won't be disappointed with brown's if you choose there.
BTW, get moist brisket. Don't be a lean guy.

Curra's is my favorite. It's in a ratty looking building off of Oltorf and South Congress heading towards I-35. Their avacado margarita is really good and their salsa is amazing
