I have stated that both phenomena have the same underlying cause. This means that the correlation between the success of the football program and the expansion of the student body is spurious -- one does not cause the other, but rather result from the same underlying cause.

a spurious relationship or spurious correlation is a mathematical relationship in which two or more events or variables are associated but not causally related, due to either coincidence or the presence of a certain third, unseen factor.
