Did you read the article? She’s now some kind of free spirit hippie writer who clearly doesn’t give a damn about what she looks like. Dolled-up 20 yo her was probably a passable trophy wife.
All of this is beside the point anyway. The takeaway here is if you’re a middle age successful man, it’s probably not a good idea to marry a directionless 20 year old who is in counseling.

That’s a fairly big age gap, even when older. Different mentalities. At 47, you’re really experienced a good bulk of your life and that changes you. You’re also pretty set in your ways at that point too.
At 30, especially for this woman, it was obviously she was going to be a totally different person from who she was at the age she married him.
The age gap works when the younger person is more mature than they should be at their age. She very much wasn’t. I’m not sure she matured much at all.

I don’t disagree that she’s a gold (or in this case, maybe bronze) digging shitbag.
But he should’ve known better than to marry some 20 year old, desperate for someone to support her, who was actively in counseling over her lack of direction. I feel bad for him but he also made that bed.

Your 30s are typically the time when you kind of “figure it out” and start living in whatever your purpose is as a full-fledged adult.
I think the therapist was saying that by marrying this guy, she wouldn’t be doing that, which is exactly what happened. Her purpose was basically doing whatever he wanted and needed, so she “missed” that phase.
At 47, she seems to be doing that now, but it’s not ideal. She’s kind of “out of phase” with her same age peers which makes relationships difficult. She even admits that in the article.
