I realize it probably isn't a spoiler, but I put that in the title as a courtesy to those who might not be aware of the premise behind the show.

Anyways...Netflix has apparently gone back and removed Hannah Baker's suicide scene from season one of 13 Reasons Why after two years of backlash. I don't know why they waited this long to do it. I personally didn't have a problem with it but, then again, I don't suffer from depression and don't have suicidal tendencies.

Here's the skinny:

quote:

Netflix has removed a suicide scene from its popular show "13 Reasons Why," more than two years after it was first shown on the streaming platform. The scene shows the teen drama's main character, Hannah Baker, taking her own life in the Season 1 finale –– and it was met with strong backlash from suicide prevention advocates over its graphic nature. Researchers also found a troubling trend in the month after the show premiered.

Ahead of the Season 3 premiere, slated for later this summer, Netflix said in a statement Tuesday that the company wanted to be "mindful" about the ongoing debate around the show.

"We've heard from many young people that '13 Reasons Why' encouraged them to start conversations about difficult issues like depression and suicide and get help—often for the first time. So on the advice of medical experts... we've decided with creator Brian Yorkey and the producers of '13 Reasons Why' to edit the scene in which Hannah takes her own life from Season 1."

Personally, I think that show is an abysmal glorification of suicide.

And there are studies which show that it did in fact result in increased suicide rates.

They need to delete the entire show.

I'm glad they did. Having teenagers and young kids seeing that kind of material isn't good. It can leave a lasting impression on them that leads to problems down the line

Completely agree with this. I've never been a fan of the show for this reason exactly.

Never watched the show but curious as to the reason for the backlash.

Was the scene over the top and gratuitous or was it a realistic picture of someone committing suicide?

If the latter, why the backlash?

Young people are always going to suicide. Even more so nowadays, digital world deletes basic human emotional needs in formative years.

Especially with overpopulation, life becomes less precious.
