Lake Charles Area Crabbing

Have friends coming from Wisconsin in a few weeks with 3 kids aged 6-10. They've never been crabbing and I'm thinking that might be a fun activity for the kids. Can anybody give me some ideas on where to take them in the Lake Charles area?

Drive down highway 27 towards holly beach. They have some recreation areas. Used to do ok at the hog island gully launch, havent been since last year. I would get there early to make sure you have a spot. There is a good one on the right past the warden station.

Celltech got the two main ones. The blue crab area is on right past warden station. It has one pier but lots of gravel area to crab off of. The pin he sent you is west cove launch. I feel it has better crabbing and easier because of the long pier. Both will get filled up quick. Be early and have fun. If all else fails, can always go to rockefeller

The wife and I went this past Friday to the same area talked about in this thread. We did horrible but don’t let that discourage you. We usually get quite a few, they just weren’t biting when we went.
I’m assuming you don’t have access to a boat?

bring some dead shrimp and a whole bunch of lead jigheads they will catch all kinds of stuff
I have had real good luck using cut mullet on a fishing rod for crabs throw to the middle and just reel em in slow

We did the west cove last weekend.
Caught about 35. A lot were small and so I kept about 15. They were biting so often the kids had fun. I kept enough for a stew.
Plenty of gravel area and there are bathrooms across the road on the west side for the girls.
Make sure you use COTTON string. It's against the rules to use a polymer. I. Assuming in the event you lose the line they would be biodegradable.
Bring two nets. One was a bitch with 6 lines out and 3 kids. I ran my arse off back and fourth. Think about a pop up tent. Get the kids out of the sun for a break.

Damn, I never knew that. I reckon I've dodged a few bullets there

A little further east there is the canals going to Rutherford Beach or Rockefeller Refuge. The refuge is a great place for crabbing and has tons of wildlife.

Get some gloves to clean the crabs. Don't need to invite any infections this time of year with the flesh eating shite.

I do but taking the kids crabbing will be a one time thing and I think staying on the bank will be safer and easier, especially when they get tired and bored!
