they're not required but they're super fun and so much faster than a regular lawn tractor. i have a regular JD lawn tractor at my house and my inlaws have a JD ZTR. Since i don't usually cut both on the same day, i didn't really realize the speed difference. I have a sprayer for my lawn tractor so i brought it over to their house to spray for clovers and after riding on theirs then getting right on mine, it felt like i wasn't even moving compared to the ZTR.
