Where is the best place to set crab traps in Grand Isle this time of year? I usually set them on the bayside of Grand Terre or right past the Coast Guard station but haven't been doing well there lately. Any suggestions?

Last June I stayed at a friends camp and I set 3 traps 150 feet off the shore in between the beach and the rocks. I added some additional weight with bricks because I didn't want the surf to cause them to tumble. Left out overnight and had 24 crabs the next morning.

Not sure that is normal but I was surprised that I had so many after a 14 hour soak.

It sucks right now. Even the seafood markets there didn't have a lot this past weekend. We caught about a dozen by the rocks in 2 days of crabbing this past weekend. There were tons of people crabbing and no one was catching much.

As of Sunday they still are not on the beach. Well check that, the small crabs are all over the place, but you will we be lucky to scrap together 1-2 dozen of crabs you can eat. Those crabs will be on the smaller side too but most of them are full of Eggs.

Good thing is the May season is over for trawling. You can go put them anywhere in the bay and don't have to worry about a trawler catching them. I would just move them around until you find an area that is catching some.

I went this weekend and ran a trot line about 40 yds from the bank and caught 4 doz in about 2 hrs each day. It sucks until around 6pm then they turn on.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to set traps Wednesday-Sunday this weekend and I'll post back how I did.
