When we're on fly-then-drive trips with rental cars (we see a lot of National Parks that way) I always pack a tote bag style soft cooler in my suitcase to use in the car.

same but we pack a soft sided cooler full of bulky items like shoes and then ship it ahead of us to a nearby ups store. When we get ready to go home, pack it up again and ship it home

the RTIC cooler I have has been on road trips in every western state so far as except Arizona and NM

Another thing you can do is buy a backpack cooler if you are flying somewhere, but need a cooler. I have the Engel backpack cooler and I used it as my under seat bag. When I got to my destination, I just took everything out and put it in a small bag, and used the backpack cooler at the beach.
