not that I support what this study is getting at... but if you’re starting at a min wage job, sure you’ll get a promotion(s) soon, but you’ll still be under $10-$12/hour for a very long which is poor as shite

Making more isn't always moving up and relative to the study in the OP, 10 bones an hour is still less than the 17 needed.

Which means, minimum wage is not meant to be a career. Expecting to be the dishwasher at a restaurant your whole life and not wanting your life to be hard, is silly. My suggestion, is to find roommates to split the bill, and/or try harder at life. Hell, a laborer starting out in construction makes a minimum of $15/hour (and rising). And if you aren't a screwup, you'll likely get promoted much quicker than if you were working as a stockboy at albertson's.
