What Captain Ray said. I fish the Mississippi River around the N.O. area and as far down as Lower St. Bernard Parish. Lately I've found that earthworms work best for bait.
I've also take out fresh shrimp market bait, blood baits like beef melt, beef liver, chicken gizzards and hearts and have hardly gotten a bite on any of it, but the worms work the best.
The main problem with the river now is you need to know where the rip-rap is so you don't lose a lot of tackle on snags. Rip-rap is what we call the large chunks of broken up cement that the Corp has used for erosion control and in some spots it is near the bottom of the levee and others, it can be 100's of feet out from the bottom of the levee. With the river as high as it's been, that stuff can't be seen.
