Well no shite. Shoot a fmj in the 7mm mag and you will get roughly the same result, and if you used a hollow point in the .223 you would get closer to the result of the 7mm mag hunting round.

Your situation has more to do with the bullet choice than the round.

I know a guy that has started his kids off deer hunting with a .223/5.56. He said they have never had a deer that they didn't recover and none ran more than 50 yds. Now he took them to the range taught them to shoot and kept the shoots within 100 yds.
