My wife is beating the "I want a pool" drum, but I refuse to cave and buy one. It will end up just being another thing I will have to pay out of the arse to maintain. Like you said, if I do decide to buy one, I truly believe that I will be regretting it for the rest of my life. Especially once all my kids are out of the house in 8 years from now.

Same. We were at a friend's house yesterday who has a very nice in-ground pool (that was there when they bought the house) and she started up again.
It's one of those things where if I'm going to go do, I'm going to go nice high quality, and I'm not willing to spend that amount of money.
We pay $400/yr for a membership to a swim and tennis club. The chemicals for a pool per year would be more expensive than that.
