I'd say his ultimate assessment may be more accurate than we'd like to believe. Liberal democracy (aka the society our founders created) is a very precarious system to maintain and uphold. It necessitates a general homogeneity in culture, worldview, and civic duty/responsibility. When one faction exhibiting authoritarian ambitions reaches a certain threshold of power it becomes logical from a self-preservation perspective (one of nature's most powerful driving forces) to take authoritarian measures to prevent that faction from achieving that power and ultimately subjugating the opposition. This is why I find the authoritarian rise on the left so concerning. It necessarily leads to authoritarian counterbalance since democratic republics with limited state power aren't designed to dispatch with internal political philosophies, even those that openly seek its own destruction. Therefore Marxism fundamentally begets a rise in authoritarianism in any political environment in which it festers and gains influence.

No authoritarian system is ideal or desirable, I think this has been clearly demonstrated philosophically and empirically, but there are instances where it is logical and potentially necessary to counter a rival authoritarian force whereby other means are demonstrated to be ineffective or incapable. This is what makes the legitimization and popular spread of any authoritarian strain in a liberal democracy extremely destabilizing and dangerous. Fascism came to power, in every instance during the 20's and 30's, as a reaction to the legitimate threat of Communist take over of state power. The tolerance and rise of Marxism is the fundamental destabilizing force to any system predicated on liberty. For this reason, as I see it, there is no excuse for anyone on the conservative right or the traditional political left to tolerate the radical left and their Marxian rhetoric. I think too many have been very slow to recognize the very serious and long term threat this poses to the fundamental institutions of our society.

shite ain't hunky dory in this country right now and burying your head in the sand may be convenient for now but it's a recipe for national disaster. The best recipe is to destroy Marxism in its nest and to ALWAYS remain vigilant of its latency.
