Well, a significant portion of the debts that have been incurred are because the government got involved.

Every politician started pushing this bullshite idea that “everyone needs a college degree.”

Then once they created enough demand, and the universities happily obliged, they bought more votes from parents by offering the government’s checkbook to “guarantee” loans to people who shouldn’t have gotten them and for degrees that wouldn’t be worth the investment.

Then the greedy higher education system saw the river of money that had been directed their way and started cranking up bills through the roof.

So yes, the politicians have some responsibility to unfrick the system; though I don’t think that should be done by paying off debt.

ETA- I paid my own loans.
