I always thought that was more of an MI6 job, but that’s not surprising. The democratic government wanted to nationalize the oil companies, and BP wasn’t about to let that happen.

I read in an Eisenhower biography that the CIA was so powerful in the fifties that Ike couldn't stop such things as this operation. They had Congress in the pocket. Oftentimes LBJ toted the water for them in the Senate.
