The government needs to get out of the student loan business - the situation is not sustainable. Tuition at UL-Lafayette has shot up nearly three times what it was when I started back in 2011. Three fricking times. And that is with likely less professors and course offerings than back then. I can only imagine how bad it’s getting in other areas of the country.

I believe they weren't until the Obama years. The government guaranteed student loans, but weren't the actual lender.

Part of that is the loan situation, and part of that is less state funding.
Bobby J tried to force colleges to cut costs and stop wasting money by funding them less (in an isolated situation, not a terrible policy at all). However, all the colleges did is raise tuition, not cut crap, and allow loans to cover the higher tuition.
