WE GOT IT!!!!! Second half:

The principle for which we contend is bound to reassert itself, though it may be at another time and in another form…

It's a Jefferson Davis quote. Thank you guys so much. By piecemealing it together, I was finally able to get enough to search and actually get results.

That can't be right...

The last two words on that line look like "he died" to me. I certainly don't see "contend" unless I'm missing something.

ETA: Though I'll concede that I'm a bit bleary-eyed right now, so who knows

That is an awesome quote. As I said, those people back then wrote much more eloquently than we do now.
