Agreed Southgate has handled this very well.

The issue of club rivalries spilling over to the England camp is all to well documented and the negative impact it used to have. Rio himself has spoken about how as youngsters at West Ham him and Lampard were best friends but at england he wouldn’t speak to frank for fear of giving him an edge in the Utd vs Chelsea battle.

This has publicly spelled it out to everyone that this will not be tolerated.

Sterling is also without a doubt our best player and one for our two world class players, again this shows him and the whole squad that nobody is beyond reproach.

As for this coming out into public, do people think there would be no questions if he dropped Sterling? Like the press would just see that as a good decision and move on?
