I still don't understand the pitch they threw to Mendoza for the walkoff hit. Unless Fontenot missed his location it was way too fat for a 1/2 count. It should have been off the plate or buried inside to his ankles/feet.

Three different issues that went wrong with the Mendoza at bat, and they made the wrong decision on all 3.

First off, we should have never pitched to Mendoza. He should have been intentionally walked to get the force out at 3 bags, plus the fact he’s their best hitter.

Secondly, Fontenot should not have been out there. He was gassed. I was surprised Mendoza didn’t launch one of his 90 mph fastballs into Tiger Stadium. Mendoza had already faced him twice. Should have brought in Hess and let him close it out.

Thirdly, Mendoza should have never seen another strike after he was 1-2. Make him chase a breaking ball in the dirt, or a high fastball.
