I know it doesn't look like it from the banks, but the middle gets some pretty wicked waves that would make treading difficult on a normal day. 5'-6' rolling waves with the current is a tough one. One wave would pick you up and the next would take you down under in the current. Rinse and repeat. You'd need to be a hell of swimmer to fight through that middle section.
