But NOLA has become a caricature of itself. With transplants and nola.com filling social media with “only in New Orleans” shite posts that breed and encourage more “zomg only in New Orleans” shite posts and cringey contrived stereotypical activity.
I remember New Orleans in the Summer of 2005 before Katrina. It was a tired, worn out city, it seemed. I remember thinking how depressing things were. It was early August and I made a trip home and driving through the city just felt sad. Garbage everywhere. Grass growing high. Crime. No reason to be there. Tourists came, but it was all French Quarter stuff, it seemed, and there wasn't much reason for it.
Then Katrina hit and it was all lost and that was terrible. People came back and fought for the city and tried to recover it and a lot of energy came back for years. That was good. So, if those people and the people who came after want to Second Line, more power to them. New Orleans is a port city and has always been a place that people come TO. Some stay. The provincialism of New Orleanians that you have to go back generations to be "authentic" is dumb. And, it will eventually kill the city again.
