Suggestion: this is to avoid inheritance/estate taxes.

She gets half- tax free because it's the result of a legal action.

She doesn't have to fight his assorted children and ex wife, ex companions for what's left after estate taxes are paid.

IIRC, there's an ex wife with whom he has a child, as well as the ex's child (preDeNiro) who he adopted. Then there are twins by surrogate with his companion. There may be another companion, then there's this wife who he married twice and they have two children, the older is special needs and may be needing support for the rest of his life as well as a young daughter.

I can see Lawyers for each circling like vultures for a piece of the DeNiro estate. Makes sense for this one to get money now, rather than a piece later.
