But there is also the sales aspect. Sell the product and you can make money.

I think the point is that these companies put more emphasis on recruitment of new salespeople as opposed to actually selling the product. The hypothetical person makes $40,000 a month or whatever most likely gets a lot of the revenue from the people he/she recruited underneath her. I doubt that person actually personally sold $40,000 worth of stuff.

And I'm only arguing that people should have the freedom to join these groups. And if you join and fail, then don't blame the group, blame yourself.

I understand this point of view, but I think the government has a compelling interest in protecting people from exploitation, namely people who are unable or incapable of doing it themselves. Which is an uncomfortably large segment of the population.

Look, I hate MLM's. I think that only losers and idiots join them. But while they didn't come out and directly say it, the hosts of the podcast were advocating for these to be shut down with laws. And I'm only arguing that people should have the freedom to join these groups. And if you join and fail, then don't blame the group, blame yourself.

Look, I think we have too many laws and we don't need a new law for every little issue just because some people think others shouldn't do it.

But there are some laws needed to protect people. The FTC can actually go after a company if they think it is a pyramid scheme and if it can be proven, can shut it down. But as you learn in the podcast, it's a complex situation. As a side note, I didn't realize the head of Amway is also the head of the Chamber of Commerce..

Anyway, there is a point in MLMs where it just isn't possible for people to work their way up because they are at the bottom and there is simply not enough people available to them who hasn't joined already, who can be sold on joining. Yet they are telling these people they can get rich by working hard. It's a pyramid scheme. There are only so many people who will benefit.
