Hughes's value to the lineup is negative. Not only is he an almost guaranteed out, but he affects the hitter in front of him. By not posing a threat, pitchers can just pitch around the hitter in front of Hughes. And it's not like Hughes is a star middle infielder--he's an OK 3rd baseman at this point.

Reid's fielding at 3rd is not as much of a liability as Hughes's abysmal offense.

It’s not just about who is better at third, it’s also about who is better at first.
