Were they really? It’s been a long time since I watched the earlier seasons, but I didn’t remember them being present at all. At the very least I don’t recall them playing anywhere near the important role to the plot that they did in the books.

They weren't as important. The whole war in the riverlands was really downplayed compared to the books. I would have loved to see that fleshed out more.

I mean...they captured Jaime and Brienne, attempted to rape Brienne, cut off Jaime’s hand, made Jaime drink horse piss, brought them to Roose Bolton at Harrenhall, made Brienne fight the bear, and then they/Locke spent time at both Winterfell and Castle Black... The show very clearly had an adaptation of the Brave Companions/Vargo Hoat in Locke and his men.
