Yeah, Apple being Apple, the drives are special. We always just use the OWC kits (otherworldcomputing.) A little pricey but guaranteed compatibility.

Side note, I'm still rocking my 2012 MBP because the current versions have everything soldered in. No user replaceable HDs as far as I'm aware.

I'm having an OWC drive and a battery delivered today, so that takes care of the hardware issues, but it looks like re-installing the OS might be a hassle.

Creating a bootable usb of the OS from a windows machine takes third party software and you still have to find a non-sketchy image of the OS. When I use internet recovery the mac wants to install the version of the OS that it came with, but the replacement drives claim they are only compatible with current gen OS.
