Why would you qualify it like this?

Endorsements are how they're paid. Nike/New Balance/Adidas/etc. compete to sign the top T&F athletes. That is essentially their salary.

Xavier Carter signed for like 750k with Nike out of LSU.

ETA:

Boris Berian gets like $125k a year base salary from New Balance and 5 figure bonuses for placing in events. That is not counting other income he may get from winning events, other non-competing endorsements, coaching clinics, etc. And this dude runs the 800m. Nobody outside of T&F fans know that guys name.

The bottom line is that there is a very limited earning window in T&F and Mondo is in it. IF he becomes the best pole vaulter in the world (which he's on track for), he stands to make a very, very good living.

Because I was questioning whether there are pro track and field teams that pay salaries.
