This is the main reason. Too many people would scroll to the comments and see the commenters agenda didn't align with the agenda of the article. ESPN is probably Exhibit A here. How many times did their SJW laced articles have nothing but comments opposing it?
Comment sections actually drive traffic to sites, so it was not in these sites best interests to get rid of them.
