I’ve seen people suggest that. I have a hard time believing that having a good kicker would cause a coach or coaches to play it more conservative. That would be extraordinarily dumb.

He did send Cole in for a certain FG against Florida in the 2nd quarter of that game, which I felt was a tactical mistake, and changed the complexion of that game. O didn't even challenge the spot which was 4th-and-inches.

Tracy was AUTOMATIC inside 40 (ironically pretty sure his only miss inside 40 was against Bama. That was the result of the football gods spiting O for kicking a “sad field goal :(“ ).

I think considering the limitations of the offense, and the superiority of the defense, O definitely got very tight butthole inside the red zone.

Which is pretty ironic considering the success this team had on 4th downs. I do remember a couple of goal line 4th down conversions but I also remember A LOT of Tracy field goals from 33, 37, 34, etc.

idk about college, including this specific case but it happens all the time in the NFL
