As a Louisianan who travels to eat BBQ, no state as a whole does it as well as Texas. I love brisket and pork, but as I said earlier in this thread the dozen or so NC bbq places I visited were, at best, decent and seemed to mail it in. In Texas, places like La Barbecue and Louis Mueller are memorable and amazing. Hell, even Rudy's extra moist was more pleasurable than anything I had in NC.

Georgia has never been an elite BBQ state, but Atlanta is hitting its stride in no small part because we've got several Texas-influenced places making great brisket and combining that with very good pulled pork that is difficult to find in Texas.
