Carrabelle? Dog Island?

Trying to finally lock down our end of summer trip-
Anybody been to Carrabelle?
How are the beaches/water?
Is fishing any good?
Is a day trip or 2 out to Dog Island a must?

Dog Island is the awesome if you just want to sit around and do nothing, but good luck finding a place to stay overnight out there. I'm not sure if they relaxed the rules, but maybe 7-8 years ago they made it to where you couldn't rent anything there unless you know someone. We have to pretend we're family members of the people who own the place we stay at.
The water around Carrabelle can get a little murky depending on currents and how much water is coming out of the river right there.
Great fishing around there.
Have you looked in to St. George at all?

Our Dog Island ventures would strictly be by our boat to enjoy the beach...if there is enough difference in the quality of the beach/water between that and carabelle...
We've definitely considered St. George...its still on the short list

If you have a boat, then definitely go to Dog Island for a day. It's only 15-20 minutes across the bay and the beach is better quality. Stay towards the western half and you'll be the only ones there. Take your crab traps, too.
Fishing around the island is pretty good at both ends where it wraps around back in to the bay.

Yeah, it's not far. Cute town and would be a great place to live. Beaches are mediocre at best. There is one to the west of town where the sand is OK but there is a huge RV park across the road so it's always pretty crowded. And Carabelle has a river so the water is not all that great. And it's in the bay so usually no waves, and again, the water is not very good.
Fishing can be very good. Carabelle is mostly a fishing town. People head out to Dog Island and around St. George and offshore.
I have not been to Dog Island but St. George Island is one of my favorite places on this earth. I'd stay there.

I wouldn’t go east of St George personally. It’s a nice drive and good fishing, but as far as vacationing to a ‘beach’ it’s river delta, swamp, and marsh mostly all through there.
Are you opposed to going to St George? Or Indian Pass?

Just go to cape San blas, you can day trip to any of those places, but no reason too. Everything you would need is in the bay or beach. Fishing is good.

Eat at Angelo and Sons, probably one of the top 5 restaurants on the entire Gulf of Mexico

I'm not opposed to really anything...except high populations
Ideally, I'd be able to go fish in the morning a couple days and then meet up with the family for lunch and beach the rest of the day. Just came across a couple of VRBO's at Carrabelle and had never considered it.
Water and beaches have got to be legit...fishing can be sacrificed a bit, beach days can not.

You want Cape San Blas Or St George then. My personal preference is Indian pass because you are half way to Apalachicola.
You should also take a very hard look at St George. Nice thing about St George is there's a couple of restaurants, a gas station for ice and beer, etc. within 1-3 miles.
The Apalachicola River delta is there in Apalachicola and St George is basically straight south of that. It mostly flows south and east. So Cape San Blas being to the west generally has nicer water and beaches.
The only thing I personally don't like about the Cape is you are a long way from a store, restaurant, etc.
