eh, kind of. Furniss had fewer ABs because he walked more. They each played 4 years and each probably had similar number of plate appearances.
I thought that would be the case too so I just looked it up:
Furniss - 1162 PA
Duplantis - 1150 PA and counting

That's honestly really surprising to me considering 1) our offense was much better when Furniss was here, so one would think he'd see more plate appearances, on average, each game; and 2) We went to the CWS from 96-98, and played in 4 games in the CWS each of those years. I guess maybe the difference may be that we have done better in the SECT than when Furniss was here and the NCAAT is longer and takes more games to get to Omaha. For instance, Furniss played in 4 total NCAAT games in 1995, 9 total NCAAT and CWS games in 1996, 10 total in 1997, and 9 total in 1998 (32 total). Duplantis played in 6 in 2016, 12 in 2017, and 4 last year (22 total). SO he has only 10 fewer in 1 fewer season, yet we only made it to Omaha in one of those seasons.
Regardless, when we're talking about 4 seasons of baseball with maybe only 10 or so games left to play for Dups, depending on how the postseason goes, that is really really close in terms of TPAs
Honestly, I'm just a little disheartened that the SEC record is going to be in Starkville now moreso than any sentimentality I have with Furniss holding the record.
