You're using all these little anecdotes so I will use one...people pay money to see sporting events all the time where they don't like the person or team they paid to see and they generally "boo" those they don't like. With Tiger it was easily seen as universal approval(also they paid money to watch the Masters/PGA Tour, not just Tiger) as he kept advancing.
